Easter is a very strongly felt festivity in Sicily. All week is filed with events and rituals all in memory of Christ’s passion. Visiting Noto during this period of time is a unique experience giving you the chance of participating in the numerous parades which go through town. The lively participation of the locals create an atmosphere that takes you back a few hundred years.
We thought of a three day itinerary to discover this wonderful land whilst not giving up on a relaxing long weekend.
Arrival not later than Friday after lunch to give yourself the chance of seeing and participating to the procession of Santa Spina in Noto. In this parade the remains of Santa Spina are carried out of the ancient city inside a golden shrine and through the old town centre together with the simulacrum (statue) of the dead Jesus and of the Holy Virgin. The whole walking ceremony is followed by the various confraternities, the marching band and locals devotees.
Remember to taste the typical easter sweet the cassata.
The next day you could enjoy the 30min drive to Ragusa Ibla passing thought Modica where you can, and should, taste the world famous Modica chocolate.
For the Easter Sunday Noto offers you another timeless ceremony: “La Pace” – the Peace. The procession starts at 1pm. The simulacrums of the Virgin Mary and Jesus rebirth run into each other in a hug after an evocative run ending in piazza Municipio all accompanied by fireworks and music.
If you want to help your digestion with a walk the little port of Marzamemi or the natural reserve of Vendicari are just what you are looking for.
Easter Monday is usually devoted to relaxing. on your way to the Airport in Catania our advise would be to stop by Siracusa for a snack and a quick visit.
